If you have some time please read this. Pass this information on. If you live far away, don't assume you cannot help us adopt our dogs - we have LOTS of transport options available so TELL YOUR FRIENDS.

August 12th is Petfinders "Adopt a less adoptable dog day" and this is something I've been pushing for a while now. I'd like to point out a few of our less adoptable pets on petfinder. These pets are considered less adoptable through no fault of their own - they are pets that are older, have medical issues (often issues that are not expensive or difficult to deal with), have breed 'stigma', are large mixed breed 'junk yard' type dogs, or are the wrong colour. In my experience at the shelter, black dog syndrome is very real. www.blackpearldogs.com
Sometimes, a physical condition can make a pet MORE adoptable. An amputated leg, missing eye, or healed broken bone can sometimes pull on heartstrings a little more.. but often dogs that are dealing with heartworms, red mange, allergies, or 'beyonce' who was a sweet black kitty with a rodent ulcer on her upper lip (found her forever home in MA - THANK YOU CAITLIN)- all relatively easily controlled conditions are destined to sit in shelters for long periods of time, or in kill shelters - face euthanasia.
SO, at our shelter - here are some pets we'd really love to find homes for who are 'less adoptable.'
BROWNIE, SUMO & REDMAN - 3 gorgeous chow chow mix pups. These are a 'bad rep' breed. At the age these dogs are at, they need desperately to find a home and BOND with someone NOW who will teach them great social skills. The shelter is NOT a good enviroment for these dogs to grow up in, but we fear they will.
MAE-LING & DELGADO - Two black lab 'pups'. They are now 6 months old, and have been at the shelter since 8 weeks old. Big Black Dog syndrome strikes again, these dogs are SO sweet and nobody sees them or wants them.
MELIO & BO - Two SWEET little Kittens. both came in with pretty horrific injuries, and both have made incredible recoveries. Melio was hit by a car, and has no real long term effects. He lost the end of his tail. He has healed great. Bo was probably hurt by a dog, his leg was badly broken and left untreated for a long time. It has healed in a locked position, but he still plays and uses it to bat things around so we will not be amputating it. He is a sweet people loving kitty.
WALLY - Wally was one of the more horrific cases we have seen. He is a beagle. He and his brother Saddles (now in a forever home) were found by animal control. Their collars had been removed, and they both were so badly beaten they could barely move. We think they could no longer hunt and some piece of human scum decided this was what you do with dogs that can't hunt. We did not think they would make it, but their broken bones healed. Then they had to go through grueling heartworm treatment. Both fighters pulled through. Saddles found his forever home earlier this month but Wally is still waiting.
SPOOKY & MEE MEE - Spooky is our shelter 'healer'. He fixes dogs with problems. MEE MEE came in feral, bit the animal control officer, and was terrified of humans. She and spooky formed an INCREDIBLE bond, Mee Mee will follow Spooky whereever he goes. No matter how scared she is. It has taken a LONG time, and much work but Mee Mee is making progress. She is NON-AGGRESSIVE, but painfully shy. She loves touch, when she is not scared of it. She will approach to be petted once she sees spooky do it first. Because of the incredible bond between these dogs, we have made the decision to try NOT to separate them. This would be detrimental to both their psyches. Mee Mee desperately needs more one on one than the shelter can give, but 'adopting as a pair' does not make many people ready to take this on. These dogs will BLOSSOM in a home enviroment together. We are still searching for the right home.
CASSIUS - A BIG MIXED DOG who was born in the shelter. All Cassius knows is the shelter and so when new people come to visit him at the shelter he will often bark and give an 'aggressive' impression. He is warning 'new people' that this is his home, and he'll protect it. It only takes a small amount of time out in the yard with Cassius to become his friend. But he gives that bad 'first' impression, and he's big... and he's adult...and he's dark color coat..and he's a rottie mix... All these things mean Nobody Gets Past The First Impression. It breaks our hearts.
SCRAPPY - A little black 'unremarkable' dog with a name that gives the wrong impression. Unfortunately, she knows this name and its difficult to change that up on her! Scrappy has been at the shelter a long time, been through heartworms. She's good natured, housetrained - a GREAT dog. But people don't notice her cos she's medium sized, unimpressive, and black. Please help us get scrappy NOTICED.
ETHEL - Ethel is a 9 yr old Chihuahua. She has some problems with her vision - half blind she cannot see detail. She has some arthritis/stiffness in the back legs, a fatty tissue deposit on her back leg, and a flea allergy which is clearing up great. Ethel is senior, and people don't want to take the time for her. They see all the issues, and don't see a LOVING adoring dog who is great in a quiet home. She loves laps, she doesn't bark, she doesn't nip, she is SO good natured and is HOUSETRAINED. We are in love, and hope someone will see past her age and special needs to the special dog in there!
HENRY HIGGINS II - Henry has been at the shelter since he was a pup and now weighs over 80lbs. He's fondly referred to as 'the ugliest dog in the shelter'. He's goofy, sweet and loving. But he's BIG, he's a true mutt, has droopy eyes that look red, and he doesn't stand out from the crowd. We adore him, but no one falls in love like we do on first impressions. Henry needs a home so bad...

Here are some great reasons to think about adopting a 'less adoptable pet'. Please tell your friends that might be adopting too... a lot of people don't realize that some of these animals are routinely overlooked.
Older pets are mellower — you don't have to worry about your lamp getting knocked over!
Physically challenged pets are often unaffected by their handicap — but you still look like a hero!
"Bad reputation" breeds — you get the chance to prove people wrong with your great dog!
Dark-furred pets make it easy to accessorize — black goes with everything!
Pets with behavioral issues allow you to form a tight bond as you overcome obstacles together!
Big dogs are easier to find when it is time to go to the vet! Big dogs make better pillows. They also scare away intruders just by BEING big. Even if they're the biggest babies in the world.
"Mutts" are the best tempered dogs. They get so many different breeds in there that they seem to take the best bits out of each one! And you can have fun party games guessing at the breeds in your dog - or even do a DNA test and find out!
And most of all - You get that EXTRA GOOD FEELING knowing not only did you rescue an animal from a shelter, but you rescued one of the ones in MOST need. That makes you a REAL HERO.
Ok - I'll quit ranting and go back to my dogs! Please check out our website and VOTE FOR US IN THE PETFINDER CHALLENGE DAILY - KEEP US at #1 in state and lets climb back up to the top 10 in the US!!! http://www.wynnefoa.com
